In the early days of sea travel and trade, sailors rarely left sight of the shore, as they lacked the tools and knowledge necessary to properly navigate the vast ocean. In time, the compass was invented and sailors developed a better understanding of how to use the power of the wind and currents. In the days of the tall sailing ship if a captain and crew wanted to get to their desired destination they had to pay respect to the sea and the direction of its forces. One of the greatest of these forces are the trade winds. The northern and southern hemisphere’s trade winds were a force that could not be countered, yet their power could be harnessed in order to sail to ones desired destination.
Today, sailors do not have to rely solely on the force of the trade winds for propulsion and navigation; they now have powerful engines and GPS systems that allow them to sail to anywhere in the world. Still, a good sailor continues to respect and pay close attention to the powerful forces of the seas, winds and currents.
The financial markets of today are also very sophisticated. We have powerful computer models and economists forecasting our economic and political directions, yet we often feel as if we are getting thrown around in a turbulent sea while Wall Street keeps telling us to just hold on. At times, it makes investors feel that they should just leave their money earning simple interest, but most people will never achieve their longer term goals with such a conservative investment plan.
At Tradewinds Capital Management we have developed mathematical strategies that shift as market forces change direction. Just as the early sailors learned to respect and use the earth’s natural forces, we have also learned to respect and use the forces at work in today’s financial markets. We believe that we can add additional value to a diversified investment portfolio by implementing our proprietary strategies of overweighting and underweighting specific market styles and sectors based upon the current economic, political and market forces at work.
